Book excerpt: One year ago, I became a missing person. I left everything behind--family, friends, school. It seemed like a good idea at the time. My only option, really, until I realized running from a police officer isn't as easy as I thought it would be.It's been exactly three-hundred and sixty-five days since I left home, but I'm finally ready to take the step I should have taken a year ago. I'm done hiding. I'm done running. I'm going to take my life back.It was supposed to be easy. A meeting with Jason Pierce, a private investigator, was set up for me. All I had to do was go to him, let him do his thing, and then I could go home, or so I thought. That is, until I met Jason and things got ... complicated.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume provides new insights on lying and (intentionally) misleading in and out of the courtroom, a timely topic for scholarship and society. Not all deceptive statements are lies; not every lie under oath amounts to perjury—but what are the relevant criteria? Taxonomies of falsehood based on illocutionary force, utterance context and speakers’ intentions have been debated by linguists, moral philosophers, social psychologists and cognitive scientists. Legal scholars have examined the boundary between actual perjury and garden-variety lies. The fourteen previously unpublished essays in this book apply theoretical and empirical tools to delineate the landscape of falsehood, half-truth, perjury, and verbal manipulation, including puffery, bluffing, and bullshit. The papers in this collection address conceptual and ethical aspects of lying vs. misleading and the correlation of this opposition with the Gricean pragmatic distinction between what is said and what is implicated. The questions of truth and lies addressed in this volume have long engaged the attention of scholars in linguistics, philosophy, psychology, cognitive science, organizational research, and the law, and researchers from all these fields will find this book of interest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970s news broke that former Nazis had escaped prosecution and were living the good life in the United States. Outrage swept the nation, and the public outcry put extreme pressure on the U.S. government to investigate these claims and to deport offenders. The subsequent creation of the Office of Special Investigations marked the official beginning of Nazi-hunting in the United States, but it was far from the end. Thirty years later, in November 2010, the New York Times obtained a copy of a confidential 2006 report by the Justice Department titled "The Office of Special Investigations: Striving for Accountability in the Aftermath of the Holocaust." The six-hundred-page report held shocking secrets regarding the government's botched attempts to hunt down and prosecute Nazis in the United States and its willingness to harbor and even employ these criminals after World War II. Drawing from this report as well as other sources, Spies, Lies, and Citizenship exposes scandalous new information about infamous Nazi perpetrators, including Andrija Artucković, Klaus Barbie, and Arthur Rudolph, who were sheltered and protected in the United States and beyond, and the ongoing attempts to bring the remaining Nazis, such as Josef Mengele, to justice.

Summary Book Review Duped :

Download or read book in PDF Duped written by Timothy R. Levine and published by University Alabama Press. This book was released on 2019 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A scrupulous account that overturns many commonplace notions about how we can best detect lies and falsehoods From the advent of fake news to climate-science denial and Bernie Madoff's appeal to investors, people can be astonishingly gullible. Some people appear authentic and sincere even when the facts discredit them, and many people fall victim to conspiracy theories and economic scams that should be dismissed as obviously ludicrous. This happens because of a near-universal human tendency to operate within a mindset that can be characterized as a "truth-default." We uncritically accept most of the messages we receive as "honest." We all are perceptually blind to deception. We are hardwired to be duped. The question is, can anything be done to militate against our vulnerability to deception without further eroding the trust in people and social institutions that we so desperately need in civil society? Timothy R. Levine's Duped: Truth-Default Theory and the Social Science of Lying and Deception recounts a decades-long program of empirical research that culminates in a new theory of deception--truth-default theory. This theory holds that the content of incoming communication is typically and uncritically accepted as true, and most of the time, this is good. Truth-default allows humans to function socially. Further, because most deception is enacted by a few prolific liars, the so called "truth-bias" is not really a bias after all. Passive belief makes us right most of the time, but the catch is that it also makes us vulnerable to occasional deceit. Levine's research on lie detection and truth-bias has produced many provocative new findings over the years. He has uncovered what makes some people more believable than others and has discovered several ways to improve lie-detection accuracy. In Duped, Levine details where these ideas came from, how they were tested, and how the findings combine to produce a coherent new understanding of human deception and deception detection.

Download or read book in PDF History in a Post-Truth World written by Marius Gudonis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-10-07 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: History in a Post-Truth World: Theory and Praxis explores one of the most significant paradigm shifts in public discourse. A post-truth environment that appeals primarily to emotion, elevates personal belief, and devalues expert opinion has important implications far beyond Brexit or the election of Donald Trump, and has a profound impact on how history is produced and consumed. Post-truth history is not merely a synonym for lies. This book argues that indifference to historicity by both the purveyor and the recipient, contempt for expert opinion that contradicts it, and ideological motivation are its key characteristics. Taking a multidisciplinary approach, this work explores some of the following questions: What exactly is post-truth history? Does it represent a new phenomenon? Does the historian have a special role to play in preserving public memory from ‘alternative facts’? Do academics more generally have an obligation to combat fake news and fake history both in universities and on social media? How has a ‘post-truth culture’ impacted professional and popular historical discourse? Looking at theoretical dimensions and case studies from around the world, this book explores the violent potential of post-truth history and calls on readers to resist.

Download or read book in PDF Challenges to Civil Rights Guarantees in India written by A.G. Noorani and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-13 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The civil rights of Indian citizens are guaranteed both in the Indian Constitution and through the State's international commitments. Despite these guarantees, the civil rights framework encounters numerous challenges from the State—problematic counter-terrorism laws, continuation of the death penalty, misuse of arrest and preventive detention powers, lack of implementation, and impunity. Through nine incisive essays on both traditional and emerging issues, this volume examines the prevailing imbalance between individual rights and State power. Many laws designed to protect the State do little more than protect State power at the expense of her citizens, directly flouting the Constitution, international law, and democratic principles. The authors critically analyse most of these laws, examining their justifications, background debates, and evolution, along with how they violate constitutional and international law. Taking into account relevant and contemporary comparative case law and developments in international law, this book makes a strong case for bold legal reforms and suggests various measures for improvement.

Download or read book in PDF Who's Responsible? written by United Nations OHCHR and published by United Nations. This book was released on 2019-02-25 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: United Nations Commissions of Inquiry (CoIs), Fact-Finding Missions (FFMs) and similar complex human rights investigations are regularly, and with increasing frequency, called upon to “identify those responsible” for violations and crimes falling within their mandate. Yet identifying responsible parties poses complex legal and methodological challenges. Despite variations in mandate language, applicable legal regimes, political context, membership, timing and budgets, the practice of CoIs, FFMs and similar complex investigations is developing in this area. OHCHR has a wealth of institutional experience in human rights field investigations where the identification of allegedly responsible individuals is a regular feature. This guidance draws upon that practice and presents it together with a discussion on key policy issues, namely the collection and analysis of information on responsible individuals, and the legal and investigative challenges involved; and the management of information once collected, including maximizing its use (by reporting, sharing and safeguarding it). The publication builds on OHCHR’s existing guidance and practice for CoIs, FFMs and other investigations and sets out both the minimum steps that all investigative bodies should complete as well as additional measures that can and should be taken where feasible. This information is complemented by Recommendations or a Summary of key guidance on the points raised.

Within the remit of communication and pragmatics studies, this work marks an advancement in the direction of delving into the linguistic manifestations of manipulative discourse, its most common contexts of use and the educational paths that can be undertaken to master it in everyday interactions.
