Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For readers of Room and The Glass Castle, an astonishing memoir of one woman's rise above an unimaginable childhood. Maude Julien's parents were fanatics who believed it was their sacred duty to turn her into the ultimate survivor -- raising her in isolation, tyrannizing her childhood and subjecting her to endless drills designed to "eliminate weakness." Maude learned to hold an electric fence for minutes without flinching, and to sit perfectly still in a rat-infested cellar all night long (her mother sewed bells onto her clothes that would give her away if she moved). She endured a life without heat, hot water, adequate food, friendship, or any kind of affectionate treatment. But Maude's parents could not rule her inner life. Befriending the animals on the lonely estate as well as the characters in the novels she read in secret, young Maude nurtured in herself the compassion and love that her parents forbid as weak. And when, after more than a decade, an outsider managed to penetrate her family's paranoid world, Maude seized her opportunity. By turns horrifying and magical, The Only Girl in the World is a story that will grip you from the first page and leave you spellbound, a chilling exploration of psychological control that ends with a glorious escape.

Sample Book Insights: #1 I was not normal, and I had terrible tantrums in Lille. I was a bundle of indomitable will, full of joy and rage. I was not afraid of anything. I wanted to go to school, but my parents did not want me to. #2 Linda was a puppy that my father bought to protect the house. But she ended up sleeping in the kitchen because the nights were cold in northern France. She was eventually exiled to the unheated utility room. #3 My father trained a German shepherd to attack me if I ever tried to steal his bike. I learned my lesson, and never tried to steal his bike again. I still loved Linda just as much; I would never believe she had bitten me deliberately.

Book excerpt: The Only Girl in the Car Bookworm and dreamer, Kathy was a young girl with a tender heart, an adventurer’s spirit, and a child’s terrible confusion about her proper place in the world. As the oldest daughter in a family of six children, she seemed trapped in her role as Big Sister and Mommy’s Helper. Then, one day, teetering on the brink of adolescence, hormones surging, she heard someone call her “cheesecake,” and suddenly saw her path. “Cheesecake, jailbait, sex kitten”--the very words seemed to be “doors opening” to a splendid new self. But from the moment she decides to lose her virginity and reels in her prey, a “full-grown man,” fourteen-year-old Kathy is headed for trouble. One cold, raw March night some months later, parked in a car with four boys on the outskirts of her small suburban town, she finds it. Though she could never have foreseen the outcome of that night, the “boys in the car could just as well have been Gypsies foretelling my future,” she writes. Girls who break the rules in small towns like the one she lived in are expected to pay a very high price for their transgressions--and she did. And yet...this young girl, as scrappy a protagonist as any in our literature, manages to transform her fate. The story of how she came to be in that car, and how she stepped out of it forever altered, to be sure, yet not forever damaged, is the theme of this extraordinary coming-of-age tale.

This is the essential question of Glycosis, the debut novel of author Laurence D. Chalem that probes the natural and man-made worlds to chart a rare romantic union that is in grave and gripping danger. Expanding the lexicon, Glycosis is a tastefully told love story set on a San Diego campus that surges with suspense and intelligence. It's certain to absorb anyone taken by the mysteries of the human heart—and intricate life of the mind—whether lovers of legal or medical thrillers, or anyone who relishes a well-crafted, smart read.On the sunny campus of the University of California, San Diego, Michelle, a stunning, witty undergraduate from Korea, along with her two fine and fun-loving friends, find their destinies crossed with David when Michelle discovers him playing some of her favorite classical compositions. A brilliant, gifted doctoral student in evolutionary biology, David, and his mentor, Professor Ross, are making new strides in evolutionary theory.Just as David and Michelle deepen their connection, a dashing ex-Berkeley man threatens their premature demise. Sporting a yellow Hummer, John invites the four of them to his house in the hills to have a drink, enjoy the view, and meet his pets. It will change them all for the rest of their lives. Can David and Michelle surmount the grave obstacles that may upend their uncommon bond?In Glycosis, the science is real, the story compelling, and the food delicious. Subtly shaded with symbolism, the novel transitions from the celestial to the oceanic, and from a sports bar to the ICU and beyond. Throughout, sensory detail of music and food will immerse you in the world of these characters, from piano concertos to pop music, from junk food to fine wine. To battle evil, the lovers must learn new skills. Join them on a thought-provoking, thoroughly surprising journey.

This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When 16 year old Robyn Rihanna Fenty first moved to the United States to pursue a career in music, there was no indication that she would become anything other than another flash-in-the-pan, sub-Beyonce pop starlet. Born and raised in a working class area of Saint Michael parish in south-west Barbados, Rihanna was the eldest daughter of Monica Braithwaite and Ronald Fenty. Her father struggled with addictions to crack cocaine and alcohol, leading to her parents’ divorce when Rihanna was 14, after which she maintained contact with her father, but continued living with her mother and two younger brothers, Rorrey and Rajad. Like many teenage girls, she formed a singing group with friends and dreamt of becoming a pop star. However, unlike many teenage girls, Rihanna also benefitted from good connections. When she discovered two US record executives were holidaying on her home island, an audition for her group was arranged by mutual friends. History has forgotten the other two members of Rihanna’s singing group, but in Miss Fenty, record execs Carl Sturken and Eric Rogers saw something marketable. Jay Z did too. He signed her to Def Jam during his brief tenure as president allowing for the release of two albums of reggae-tinged R&B that would make her name. The caribbean influences in Rihanna’s early releases made her a refreshing novelty for R&B fans, but if that was all she had to offer, no doubt by now “Rihanna” would be just another footnote in pop history, alongside Ashanti, Amerie, or Christina Milian (remember them?). But Rihanna had something else. Perhaps inspired by her oft-cited idol Madonna, she has demonstrated an ability to shapeshift in a way that is always uncannily ahead of the trend.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In war films, the portrayal of deep friendships between men is commonplace. Given the sexually anxious nature of the American imagination, such bonds are often interpreted as carrying a homoerotic subtext. In Armed Forces , Robert Eberwein argues that an expanded conception of masculinity and sexuality is necessary in order to understand more fully the intricacy of these intense and emotional human relationships. Drawing on a range of examples from silent films such as What Price Glory and Wings to sound era works like The Deer Hunter, Platoon, Three Kings, and Pearl Harbor , he shows how close readings of war films, particularly in relation to their cultural contexts, demonstrate that depictions of heterosexual love, including those in romantic triangles, actually help to define and clarify the nonsexual nature of male love. The book also explores the problematic aspects of masculinity and sexuality when threatened by wounds, as in The Best Years of Our Lives, and considers the complex and persistent analogy between weapons and the male body, as in Full Metal Jacket and Saving Private Ryan .

A Sense of Detachment satirises our heartless, profiteering society, while defending timeless human values. The End of Me Old Cigar examines the decadent lives of a collection of leading media figures. The television play Jill and Jack is a comic gem that satirises the conventions of its own genre while also being a close study of sexual warfare.A Place Calling Itself Rome is a powerful reworking of Shakespeare’s Coriolanus.
