Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presenting a revised edition with a new preface of this important work, previously available only in hardback. It has long been assumed that Japan's closed country policy meant that Japan was isolated from the influence of the outside, and in particular the Western, world. However, this study of 18th century Japan, using sources wholly unstudied since their writing, reveals the profound influence that the introduction of Western technology and scientific instruments including glass, lenses and mirrors had on Japanese notions of sight, and how this change in perception was reflected most clearly in popular culture. Screech goes to the core of later eighteenth century thought through popular objects and the propositions which many considered groundbreaking on the book's first publication in 1996 have yet to be substantially challenged.

Summary Book Review The Western Scientific Gaze and Popular Imagery in Later Edo Japan :
Download or read book in PDF The Western Scientific Gaze and Popular Imagery in Later Edo Japan written by Timon Screech and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first study to consider the introduction of Western technology in the eighteenth century, when, it has been assumed, Japan continued to isolate itself from external influence. Timon Screech demonstrates that the introduction of such Western equipment as lenses, mirrors, and glass had a profound impact on Japanese notions regarding the faculty of sight. The enormity of this paradigm shift was, moreover, felt less in Japanese scientific inquiry than in art and popular culture, where the devices were often depicted and used metaphorically, as commentary on the prevailing social norms. Based on archival sources, here published for the first time, this study also sheds new light on Japanese art and its relation to the West; the relationship of science to art and popular culture; and the autonomy and internationalisation of Japanese culture.
Summary Book Review Imaging from Cells to Animals In Vivo :
Download or read book in PDF Imaging from Cells to Animals In Vivo written by Margarida Barroso and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-12-03 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Imaging from Cells to Animals In Vivo offers an overview of optical imaging techniques developed over the past two decades to investigate biological processes in live cells and tissues. It comprehensively covers the main imaging approaches used as well as the application of those techniques to biological investigations in preclinical models. Among the areas covered are cell metabolism, receptor-ligand interactions, membrane trafficking, cell signaling, cell migration, cell adhesion, cytoskeleton and other processes using various molecular optical imaging techniques in living organisms, such as mice and zebrafish. Features Brings together biology and advanced optical imaging techniques to provide an overview of progress and modern methods from microscopy to whole body imaging. Fills the need for a comprehensive view of application-driven development and use of new tools to ask new biological questions in the context of a living system. Includes basic chapters on key methods and instrumentation, from fluorescence microscopy and imaging to endoscopy, optical coherence tomography and super-resolution imaging. Discusses approaches at different length scales and biomedical applications to the study of single cell, whole organ, and whole organism behavior. Addresses the impact on discovery, such as cellular function as implicated in human disease and translational medicine, for example in cancer diagnosis. Margarida M. Barroso is a Professor in the Department of Molecular and Cellular Physiology, Albany Medical College (Albany, New York). Xavier Intes is a Professor in the Biomedical Engineering Department and Co-Director of the Center for Modeling, Simulation and Imaging for Medicine (CeMSIM) at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (Troy, New York).

Summary Book Review Membrane Potential Imaging in the Nervous System and Heart :
Download or read book in PDF Membrane Potential Imaging in the Nervous System and Heart written by Marco Canepari and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-08-03 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume discusses membrane potential imaging in the nervous system and in the heart and modern optical recording technology. Additionally, it covers organic and genetically-encoded voltage-sensitive dyes; membrane potential imaging from individual neurons, brain slices, and brains in vivo; optical imaging of cardiac tissue and arrhythmias; bio-photonics modelling. This is an expanded and fully-updated second edition, reflecting all the recent advances in this field. Twenty chapters, all authored by leading names in the field, are cohesively structured into four sections. The opening section focuses on the history and principles of membrane potential imaging and lends context to the following sections, which examine applications in single neurons, networks, large neuronal populations and the heart. Topics discussed include population membrane potential signals in development of the vertebrate nervous system, use of membrane potential imaging from dendrites and axons, and depth-resolved optical imaging of cardiac activation and repolarization. The final section discusses the potential – and limitations – for new developments in the field, including new technology such as non-linear optics, advanced microscope designs and genetically encoded voltage sensors. Membrane Potential Imaging in the Nervous System and Heart is ideal for neurologists, electro physiologists, cardiologists and those who are interested in the applications and the future of membrane potential imaging.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The combination of an increasing prevalence of diabetes and the aging of populations enables the appearance of a greater number of associated complications such as diabetic retinopathy. Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of preventable vision loss in working-age adults. The objective of this Special Issue is to highlight the existing evidence regarding the relationship between oxidative stress and low-grade chronic inflammation induced by hyperglycemia with the development and progression of diabetic retinopathy, with an emphasis on the importance of early diagnosis and the use of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory approaches to prevent or delay the harmful effects of diabetes on retinal tissue.
