Book excerpt: GetAbstract Summary: Get the key points from this book in less than 10 minutes. When Harry Markopolos began his career in the securities industry, he applied his mathematical skills to the design of investment products. In particular, his bosses wanted him to create investment instruments that competed with those offered by financier Bernie Madoff. When Markopolos found that Madoff's results were impossible to match, he suspected that Madoff was running a Ponzi scheme - not investing money, but paying each investor with cash from other investors. His suspicion led to an investigative odyssey. Markopolos and his team uncovered not only the largest financial fraud in history, but also a dangerously dysfunctional U.S. regulatory system. In this book, Markopolos recounts his frustrating, thwarted efforts to warn the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) about the threat Madoff posed to unwary investors. The SEC failed to respond to his detailed written evidence, though Markopolos submitted it five times, starting in 2000, long before Madoff finally confessed in 2008 (he is now serving 150 years in jail). getAbstract recommends this engrossing book to readers who want to learn more about this epic scandal and its implications for financial industry regulation. Download or read book in PDF Existential Psychotherapy and the Interpretation of Dreams written by Clark E. Moustakas and published by Jason Aronson, Incorporated. This book was released on 1996-03-01 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Existential Psychotherapy and the Interpretation of Dreams, by Clark Moustakas, presents a fresh model for the effective integration of dreamwork in humanistically oriented psychotherapy. The existential-phenomenological emphasis opens channels of conscious awareness that enable people in therapy and in everyday living to awaken to their own visions, hopes, and dreams. The internal shadows and fires of individual consciousness come to light in therapy and in dreams and invite self-resources and self-directions for change in self-growth and in significant relationships. An Existential Model is presented in detail as a guide to effective psychotherapy. With slight modification, the Model is also applicable to an understanding and interpretation of one's own dreams as well as the dreams of people who are in therapy. Through existential awareness and reflective thinking, the reader is encouraged to discover constructive challenges and paradoxes that connect dreams with waking life and lead to the discovery of creative possibilities for work and living. The existential approach to psychotherapy and dream interpretation is explicated through examples of phenomenological interviewing, use of description in lifting out horizons and core meanings, and analysis of core themes that intimately embrace the self. Existential philosophy recognizes mystery encompasses the unknown and unpredictable and asserts that regardless of past suffering and impoverishment, the potentials for health and well-being are within reach. The Existential Model offers a practical methodology and a set of guides for achieving these goals and finding a future that moves beyond the restraints and rejections that have resulted from choosing the wrong path for identity expression and selfhood. The person is the central catalyst for decision and action and retains control over her or his own destiny.

Book excerpt: Set in a dystopian society in the not-too-distant future, this sci-fi novel follows the misadventures of a bar musician and army vet who's set up on terrorism charges and deported to a single-continent prison planet. After a fight in which he nearly kills a neo-Nazi, the antihero main character flees to the other end of the continent with a prisoner he knew from Earth—a Mexican anarchist and fellow musician—on a Gulliver's Travels–type journey through a number of political and religious cult compounds. With comical depictions of the various cults they encounter on the way, Free Radicals insightfully explores the often-failed attempts at utopia and the day-to-day life of two traveling musicians.

Book excerpt: Domestic violence is in the public eye as never before, but how often are abused women consulted or involved in the new services and policies? This book investigates, and reveals that the voices of survivors of domestic violence are often simply not heard; silenced, the women themselves become invisible. Is Anyone Listening? draws on the experiences of other service user movements to provide a strong conceptual framework for thinking about abused women's participation in policy and service development. It discusses empowerment issues and the women's movement against gender violence, exploring how far refuge organisations and other women's movement services have influenced statutory services and vice versa. It includes many practical ideas for involving women in the improvement of both policy and practice and gives examples of inspiring and innovatory projects. Based on a study carried out as part of the Economic and Social Research Council's Violence Research Programme, Is Anyone Listening? offers a unique analysis of the sensitive and complex issues involved in developing service user participation within the domestic violence field. The insights it provides will enable policy-makers, activists, students, practitioners and women who have experienced domestic violence to move forward together.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is Shirley Mays' third book. She is a North Carolina real estate broker and an environmental consultant. She has a Research Center at the Cotton Exchange in Wilmington, North Carolina. This book is about a conspiracy to defraud the United States taxpayers perpetrated by individuals employed by the Resolution Trust Corporation (RTC) and its successor agency on the matter in question, the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). The Resolution Trust Corporation was a US government-owned asset management company mandated to liquidate assets of the defunct savings and loan associations ("S&Ls"). Between 1989 and mid-1995, the RTC closed or otherwise resolved 747 Savings & Loans Institutions (known as thrifts) with total assets in the hundreds of billions of dollars. Shirley Mays was certified by the RTC and the FDIC as a minority woman -owned corporation. She became an “insider” and a whistleblower. Her “whistleblowing case” filed with the Department of Justice in July of 1996 was covered up by the government with lightening speed. She filed an IRS Whistleblower Case in June of 2009. She and her Congressman are now going after the corporate criminals like the IRS went after Al Capone........ for tax evasion. She has their pseudo-Federal ID numbers. “Whereas, there is no statute of limitations when you are able to show that they knew they were committing fraud. The IRS looks at a fraud case entirely differently. It can pursue any case where it can prove the company knew it was cheating, even if the underpayment was 20 years ago.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A long time ago, back in the 1960s, a close friend asked me to go along with him to a book signing in Sausalito, California. I was introduced to the author. He was a recognizable and quite famous old man. As a portrait artist, I looked closely at the bright blue eyes of a once-handsome man. He said, "Will you come and visit me in San Francisco sometime?" "Yes, I will," I replied and didn't think much about it. But within a few weeks my friend was asked by the old author to visit, and I was asked to go along. We arrived that morning to a sunny, tiny apartment. We greeted the old man, and he ushered us in. His apartment walls were covered with newspaper clippings, neatly framed. There was not a bare spot among all the signed photos of famous movie stars of days gone by. Evidently he had been very well known in the movie world too. He sat us down for a cup of tea. Then he turned to me and said, "Can I tell you things of your life? Experiences you've had and didn't have and your destiny. I will record it and put it on reel to reel for you." "Of course," I said, as I was very curious of what he might know about me. And so he talked about me and was very accurate. Then he took my hand and moved closer to me, close to my face. He said, "You have something to tell the world, the entire world. I don't know what it is, but it is the entire world." But all was forgotten for more than fifty years. A few weeks ago, Michael and I were talking about the old man. What if this was all destined--Michael's gift of seeing in the spirit as Kirilian afterimage? My search for healing and search for God? Were we destined to be together? So we decided to ask! "Was the old man right? Was I destined to write this book and tell what has been revealed?" Michael touched my head and the touch revealed, YES. I asked out loud, "Who is the book for?" The touch revealed, THOSE WHO SEEK AND LOVE GOD, THE LOST WHO NEED HELP. "Is Michael a prophet?" we asked. NO. "What is Michael? What is this ability he has?" we asked. The touch revealed, UNIQUE. And so each day, as I study scripture, I ask the questions, some about the future. There are some unanswered questions. The Lord Jesus gave these statements without my questioning: HEALING OF THE WOUNDED SPIRIT. SEVERE NUCLEAR ACCIDENT INDIA. LEARN SEED PROPAGATION. PREPARE. MY RETURN. REJOICE. The material from the touch is growing into the next book. The next book will probably be easier to write.

Book excerpt: It was quite by accident that Imma Andkaer first learned that her husband, Michael, could see into a person's aura and witness injury, disease, and a variety of emotions such as anger, love, hate, and fear. In her memoir, My Manifest and the Grail, Andkaer traces a journey into a fascinating, hidden world just beyond our sight, in which everything we think and believe produces the energies of love or hate. Andkaer chronologically shares her experiences, beginning with a traumatic childhood during which her mentally ill mother was taken away from their family. She continues through her adulthood as she married, overcame a near-death experience, became pregnant, and eventually divorced the man who had come to manipulate her at every turn. As she reveals how she bravely faced life alone as a single mother of a cherished son, Andkaer recalls a dark time; she attempted suicide and wondered if anyone would ever understand her pain. It was only when she vowed to heal herself from within that she began to see visions that took her on an empowering journey to the truth. My Manifest and the Grail shares one woman's incredible life story as she unites her spirit with the "Touch" to offer an important message of healing.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching is a dedicated job for people who are interested in molding young lives. But when one is both black and a substitute teacher with an accent, the job becomes very challenging. Teaching is a white color and middle class job. Alpha being black with an accent had a real trip to hell and back because he had a daily shower of humiliations torturous and sometimes disrespectful and overt racist instances. His determination was stretched to the limits of physical and mental endurance in the public school where racism, ethnic cleansing, hatred for people of color and accent exerted their weight like lead. The result was frustration, demotivation and the feeling of hopelessness. This novel is a true story of classroom encounter, but the names, places and scenes are fictitoius. Alpha stayed at the end of the line with all his qualifications and experience while those who came after him, less qualified and experience moved on. But the organization and maintenance of the system was like a sinking old flag ship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tendency to reciprocate – to return good for good and evil for evil – is a potent force in human life, and the concept of reciprocity is closely connected to fundamental notions of ‘justice’, ‘obligation’ or ‘duty’, ‘gratitude’ and ‘equality’. In Reciprocity, first published in 1986, Lawrence Becker presents a sustained argument about reciprocity, beginning with the strategy for developing a moral theory of the virtues. He considers the concept of reciprocity in detail, contending that it is a basic virtue that provides the basis for parental authority, obligations to future generations, and obedience to law. Throughout the first two parts of the book, Becker intersperses short pieces of his own narrative fiction to enrich reflection on the philosophical arguments. The final part is devoted to extensive bibliographical essays, ranging over anthropology, psychology, political theory and law, as well as the relevant ethics and political philosophy.

For all of the thousands of pages written on the recent global financial crisis, there is very little solid ethical analysis of the underlying causes and concepts. He makes a critical distinction betweenthe motivation of financial actors and their competence, then argues that most of the analysis of the crisis has been about motivation. In particular many have called into question the very idea of capitalism as seeking to maximize profits for shareholders. While DeBruin admits that motivation is an important idea, he traces much of the difficulty to incompetence on the part of multiple stakeholders, who have no real motivation to learn about how the basic ideas in finance actually work"--
