Aurora Lockhart has been tormented by horrifying nightmares of an apocalyptic flood since the disappearance of her mother several years ago. Even by day the images haunt her, signs of something catastrophic revealing themselves despite her efforts to suppress their influence. The sea approaches... Aurora knows the dreams aren't real. This doesn't stop her from leaving it all behind, moving to Port City, the largest urban area in Maine to pursue an art degree, live with her best friend, and start over. The storm is coming... Something's wrong, though, and signs point to the unthinkable. Can Aurora awaken from the nightmare, or will the city be swallowed by the sea?

It provides actionable managerial advice on planning for, measuring, and innovatively navigating social media storms. Based on a sound theoretical background and illustrated by vivid real-life examples and case studies throughout every chapter, this book combines thorough explanations of the elements of business decision-making, market interaction, consumer psychology, branding, and business communication. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of empire contains features that are both irreducibly spectral and terrifyingly real. With much of both aspects prevailing at subliminal levels, it is nearly impossible for the casual observer to think through the maze of contradictions and constitutive forces inherent in the imperial system. In her latest work of nonfiction, Meditations on the Human Condition in an Imperial Age, author and political philosopher Irina V. Boca uses her expertise and research to help readers analyze the presence of empire as an indelible contemporary political force. This intricate work unravels the Gordian knot of imperial politics and allows the reader to consider overlapping concepts from multiple perspectives, finally making it possible for the general audience to get all the facts. From post-Hegelian philosophy to political science and popular culture, the author has identified the intricately woven forces of imperial politics and invites readers to reconsider any easy location of power and any clear-cut path to resistance or liberation.

Download or read book in PDF Sea of Storms written by Stuart B. Schwartz and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2016-07-26 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A panoramic social history of hurricanes in the Caribbean The diverse cultures of the Caribbean have been shaped as much by hurricanes as they have by diplomacy, commerce, or the legacy of colonial rule. In this panoramic work of social history, Stuart Schwartz examines how Caribbean societies have responded to the dangers of hurricanes, and how these destructive storms have influenced the region's history, from the rise of plantations, to slavery and its abolition, to migrations, racial conflict, and war. Taking readers from the voyages of Columbus to the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, Schwartz looks at the ethical, political, and economic challenges that hurricanes posed to the Caribbean’s indigenous populations and the different European peoples who ventured to the New World to exploit its riches. He describes how the United States provided the model for responding to environmental threats when it emerged as a major power and began to exert its influence over the Caribbean in the nineteenth century, and how the region’s governments came to assume greater responsibilities for prevention and relief, efforts that by the end of the twentieth century were being questioned by free-market neoliberals. Schwartz sheds light on catastrophes like Katrina by framing them within a long and contentious history of human interaction with the natural world. Spanning more than five centuries and drawing on extensive archival research in Europe and the Americas, Sea of Storms emphasizes the continuing role of race, social inequality, and economic ideology in the shaping of our responses to natural disaster.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking Robert Post's seminal article 'The Social Foundations of Reputation and the Constitution' as a starting point, this volume examines how the concept of reputation changes to reflect social, political, economic, cultural and technological developments. It suggests that the value of a good reputation is not immutable and analyzes the history and doctrines of defamation law in the US and the UK. A selection of Australian case studies illustrates different concepts of defamation law and offers insights into their specific nature. Drawing on approaches to celebrity in media and cultural studies, the author conceptualizes reputation as a media construct and explains how reputation as celebrity is of great contemporary relevance at this point in the history of defamation law.
