Book excerpt: The physical dimension is fractured. What remain are numerous fragmented worlds moving simultaneously through time, sharing a common history, connected only by a guarded portal. On a parallel earth, in the city of Bastul, Colonel Adair Lorus disappears while investigating the death of an informant, triggering a series of events which will tear his family apart and set in motion the resolution of an ancient struggle. Kael, sentenced to death after rising up against the cruel leadership of his new step-father, is rescued from prison and trained in the arts of war by a mystical order of clerics. Excelling in every aspect of his training, Kael inwardly struggles to give himself fully to the methods of his new family, or the god they worship. Maeryn, bitter over the disappearance of her husband and supposed execution of her son, fears for her life at the hands of her newly appointed husband. Finding comfort and purpose in her unborn child, she determines to undermine his authority by reaching out to an underground social movement known as the Resistance. After being forced from his home, Kael's former mentor, Saba, uncovers a clue to Adair's disappearance. Sensing a connection to his own forgotten past, Saba begins an investigation which leads to the discovery of a secret military organization operating within the Orudan Empire. In book one of his bestselling debut series, Jason Tesar launches an epic saga that will journey from earth's mythological past to its post-apocalyptic future, blending the genres of fantasy, sci-fi, and military/political suspense.
Download or read book in PDF Visions of Glory written by Kathleen Diffley and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2019-11-01 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visions of Glory brings together twenty-two images and twenty-two brisk essays, each essay connecting an image to the events that unfolded during a particular year of the Civil War. The book focuses on a diverse set of images that include a depiction of former slaves whipping their erstwhile overseer distributed by an African American publisher, a census graph published in the New York Times, and a cutout of a child’s hand sent by a southern mother to her husband at the front. The essays in this collection reveal how wartime women and men created both written accounts and a visual register to make sense of this pivotal period. The collection proceeds chronologically, providing a nuanced history by highlighting the multiple meanings an assorted group of writers and readers discerned from the same set of circumstances. In so doing, this volume assembles contingent and fractured visions of the Civil War, but its differing perspectives also reveal a set of overlapping concerns. A number of essays focus in particular on African American engagements with visual culture. The collection also emphasizes the role that women played in making, disseminating, or interpreting wartime images. While every essay explores the relationship between image and word, several contributions focus on the ways in which Civil War images complicate an understanding of canonical writers such as Emerson, Melville, and Whitman.
Download or read book in PDF The Russia Hand written by Strobe Talbott and published by Random House. This book was released on 2007-12-18 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the past ten years, few issues have mattered more to America’s vital interests or to the shape of the twenty-first century than Russia’s fate. To cheer the fall of a bankrupt totalitarian regime is one thing; to build on its ruins a stable democratic state is quite another. The challenge of helping to steer post-Soviet Russia-with its thousands of nuclear weapons and seething ethnic tensions-between the Scylla of a communist restoration and the Charybdis of anarchy fell to the former governor of a poor, landlocked Southern state who had won national election by focusing on domestic issues. No one could have predicted that by the end of Bill Clinton’s second term he would meet with his Kremlin counterparts more often than had all of his predecessors from Harry Truman to George Bush combined, or that his presidency and his legacy would be so determined by his need to be his own Russia hand. With Bill Clinton at every step was Strobe Talbott, the deputy secretary of state whose expertise was the former Soviet Union. Talbott was Clinton’s old friend, one of his most trusted advisers, a frequent envoy on the most sensitive of diplomatic missions and, as this book shows, a sharp-eyed observer. The Russia Hand is without question among the most candid, intimate and illuminating foreign-policy memoirs ever written in the long history of such books. It offers unparalleled insight into the inner workings of policymaking and diplomacy alike. With the scope of nearly a decade, it reveals the hidden play of personalities and the closed-door meetings that shaped the most crucial events of our time, from NATO expansion, missile defense and the Balkan wars to coping with Russia’s near-meltdown in the wake of the Asian financial crisis. The book is dominated by two gifted, charismatic and flawed men, Bill Clinton and Boris Yeltsin, who quickly formed one of the most intense and consequential bonds in the annals of statecraft. It also sheds new light on Vladimir Putin, as well as the altered landscape after September 11, 2001. The Russia Hand is the first great memoir about war and peace in the post-cold war world.

In the East, tension between North and South pulled the country apart, with a weak President helpless to stop it and Secretary of War Jefferson Davis following his own agenda. But in the West, a different threat arose. A new generation of Apache leaders were taking over, who would no longer talk peace with the White Eyes. Instead they would fight with the courage, daring, and brilliance that was the Apache pride. First Lieutenant Nathanial Barrington was already a battle-scarred veteran of the Apache Wars. But nothing in his passion-driven life as a man and fighting life as a soldier prepared him for the love that flamed in the shadow of the gathering storm – or for the violence sweeping over the Southwest in the greatest test the U.S. Army ever faced and the hardest choice Barrington ever had to make… Savage Frontier.

Download or read book in PDF Empires at War written by Robert Gerwarth and published by Greater War. This book was released on 2014 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empires at War, 1911-1923 offers a new perspective on the history of the Great War, looking at the war beyond the generally-accepted 1914-1918 timeline, and as a global war between empires, rather than a European war between nation-states. The volume expands the story of the war both in time and space to include the violent conflicts that preceded and followed World War I, from the 1911 Italian invasion of Libya to the massive violence that followed the collapse of the Ottoman, Russian, and Austrian empires until 1923. It argues that the traditional focus on the period between August 1914 and November 1918 makes more sense for the victorious western front powers (notably Britain and France), than it does for much of central-eastern and south-eastern Europe or for those colonial troops whose demobilization did not begin in November 1918. The paroxysm of 1914-18 has to be seen in the wider context of armed imperial conflict that began in 1911 and did not end until 1923. If we take the Great War seriously as a world war, we must, a century after the event, adopt a perspective that does justice more fully to the millions of imperial subjects called upon to defend their imperial governments' interest, to theatres of war that lay far beyond Europe including in Asia and Africa and, more generally, to the wartime roles and experiences of innumerable peoples from outside the European continent. Empires at War also tells the story of the broad, global mobilizations that saw African soldiers and Chinese labourers in the trenches of the Western front, Indian troops in Jerusalem, and the Japanese military occupying Chinese territory. Finally, the volume shows how the war set the stage for the collapse not only of specific empires but of the imperial world order.

Summary Book Review The Complete Restoration Edition Scriptures: Volumes 1-3 :
Download or read book in PDF The Complete Restoration Edition Scriptures: Volumes 1-3 written by and published by Restoration Scriptures Foundation. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 2489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This eBook contains the complete Restoration Edition Scriptures. Volume 1: The Old Covenants - Comprised of Joseph Smith's Translation of The Old Testament. Volume 2: The New Covenants - Comprised of Joseph Smith's Translation of The New Testament and the Book of Mormon. Volume 3: Teachings and Commandments and A Glossary of Gospel Terms. As one of his most important works, Joseph Smith Jr. spent years making inspired clarifications to the Bible text. Here, for the first time, every known emendation that he wrote or taught has been assembled into the most complete version of Joseph Smith's New Translation of the Bible. In October 1831, Joseph Smith said "except the church receive the fullness of the scriptures that they would yet fall." From that time until his death in 1844, Joseph Smith worked diligently to prepare an edition of the Bible that could be received by the church. However, he was murdered before completing the work, and with the scattering of his notes following his death, it was never published in its entirety until now. The Book of Mormon is a sacred text to millions worldwide. Joseph Smith was led to the buried records in 1823. Thereafter he sought and received the ability to translate the records by the gift and power of God. He published the resulting work as the Book of Mormon in 1830. Since then, many churches have claimed the book as scripture, but it is not the property of any particular church or denomination. Rather, it is a gift to the world, inviting all to come unto Christ, and teaching the path back to His presence. This Restoration Edition of the Book of Mormon is the most accurate version ever printed, and is remarkable among Christian books both for what it is and what it is not. Like the Bible, it makes the case for Christ as the long-awaited Messiah, Savior and Redeemer of the world. Unlike other scripture that descended through thousands of years of scribal copying, alterations and error, the Book of Mormon was translated only once, directly from the original written manuscripts recorded between 600 BC and 400 AD. Teachings and Commandments boldly declares that the heavens are open again, and that the prophesied days of revelation and warning are already upon us. This volume contains the most true and accurate compilation of the history and revelations of Joseph Smith, the first modern American prophet. Each of the revelations has been diligently compared with the originals in an effort to retain only the authentic text of each, and to discard all changes subsequently made by others. The volume also includes Lectures on Faith, which was originally published in 1835 as the first part of Doctrine and Covenants, and teaches more about the character, attributes, and perfections of God than any other modern work; and the Book of Abraham as originally restored by revelation to Joseph Smith. This volume also contains the revelations of Denver Snuffer, another witness of the resurrected Lord who has walked and talked with Him, and the Testimony of St. John as restored by revelation. Taken together, the various works included in Teachings and Commandments speak to us through hundreds of revelations containing thousands of words from God, all pertaining to us in our day and time. A Glossary of Gospel Terms provides inspired and thought provoking insights into many of the most interesting terms and puzzling concepts found in scripture. A wealth of information, this intriguing book should be the companion of everyone searching for a deeper understanding of the things of God. Covering hundreds of scriptural topics, A Glossary of Gospel Terms adds depth to seemingly well-understood topics, and provides new and delicious insights into those areas of spirituality that have been shrouded in mystery until now. Its objective is to uncover truth and inspire readers to pursue a relationship with Christ.

Summary Book Review The First Infantry Division and the U.S. Army Transformed :
Download or read book in PDF The First Infantry Division and the U.S. Army Transformed written by Gregory Fontenot and published by University of Missouri Press. This book was released on 2017-06-30 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fast-paced and compelling read closes a significant gap in the historiography of the late Cold War U.S. Army and is crucial for understanding the current situation in the Middle East. From the author's introduction: “My purpose is a narrative history of the 1st Infantry Division from 1970 through the Operation Desert Storm celebration held 4th of July 1991. This story is an account of the revolutionary changes in the late Cold War. The Army that overran Saddam Hussein’s Legions in four days was the product of important changes stimulated both by social changes and institutional reform. The 1st Infantry Division reflected benefits of those changes, despite its low priority for troops and material. The Division was not an elite formation, but rather excelled in the context of the Army as an institution.” This book begins with a preface by Gordon R. Sullivan, General, USA, Retired. In twelve chapters, author Gregory Fontenot explains the history of the 1st infantry Division from 1970 to 1991. In doing so, his fast-paced narrative includes elements to expand the knowledge of non-military readers. These elements include a glossary, a key to abbreviations, maps, nearly two dozen photographs, and thorough bibliography. The First infantry Division and the U.S. Army Transformed: Road to Victory in Desert Storm is published with support from the First Division Museum at Cantigny.
