Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This story takes place in the early 16th Century; a time when the world seemed to be expanding at an almost exponential rate. It occurs in South America in a land known as Maya: this is not a tale of what was, but rather, a story of what might have been if I had been in charge of that era. The main character, Cuauhtémoc, is born in a small village in the northwestern part of Maya: the story line follows his life from birth, through birdman-school, where he learns to become a birdman and carry messages. The account unwinds, telling of his adventures, his fights with pirate raiders as well as some of his own people; and by end of the book he is twelve years of age and is sent to the City of Emperors by the Commander of the soldier’s garrison.

This book was released on 2022-05-05 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Religion was integral to the conduct of war in the ancient world and the Romans were certainly no exception. No campaign was undertaken, no battle risked, without first making sacrifice to propitiate the appropriate gods (such as Mars, god of War) or consulting oracles and omens to divine their plans. Yet the link between war and religion is an area that has been regularly overlooked by modern scholars examining the conflicts of these times. This volume addresses that omission by drawing together the work of experts from across the globe. The chapters have been carefully structured by the editors so that this wide array of scholarship combines to give a coherent, comprehensive study of the role of religion in the wars of the Roman Empire. Aspects considered in depth include: the Imperial cults and legionary loyalty; the army and religious/regional disputes; Trajan and religion; Constantine and Christianity; omens and portents; funerary cults and practices; the cult of Mithras; the Imperial sacramentum; religion & Imperial military medicine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1966 a group of students, Boy Scouts, and local citizens rediscovered all that remained of a then virtually unknown community called Weeksville: four frame houses on Hunterfly Road. The infrastructure and vibrant history of Weeksville, an African American community that had become one of the largest free black communities in nineteenth century United States, were virtually wiped out by Brooklyn’s exploding population and expanding urban grid. Weeksville was founded by African American entrepreneurs after slavery ended in New York State in 1827. Located in eastern Brooklyn, Weeksville provided a space of physical safety, economic prosperity, education, and even political power for its black population, who organized churches, a school, orphan asylum, home for the aged, newspapers, and the national African Civilization Society. Notable residents of Weeksville, such as journalist and educator Junius P. Morell, participated in every major national effort for African American rights, including the Civil War. In Brooklyn’s Promised Land, Judith Wellman not only tells the important narrative of Weeksville’s growth, disappearance, and eventual rediscovery, but also highlights the stories of the people who created this community. Drawing on maps, newspapers, census records, photographs, and the material culture of buildings and artifacts, Wellman reconstructs the social history and national significance of this extraordinary place. Through the lens of this local community, Brooklyn’s Promised Land highlights themes still relevant to African Americans across the country.

Download or read book in PDF The Soul's Journey written by Lawrence Edwards and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE SOUL'S JOURNEY: GUIDANCE FROM THE DIVINE WITHIN propels the reader onto a breathtaking visionary quest as the soul's longing to know the Divine is answered by the loving power of Grace. Dr. Edwards uses his personal mystical experiences to gradually unfold the tasks to be mastered and the lessons to be learned as we tread our individual path to the Divine. His wisdom is grounded in both direct experience as well as in the knowledge of Jungian archetypal psychology, Eastern and Western mysticism and mythology. The book presents a rich interweaving of personal trials and challenges, insights from poet saints and mystics, uplifting experiences of the Divine being discovered in everyday life, and lofty overviews of the spiritual terrain from different vantage points. The reader will have the good fortune to find their faith and their enthusiasm for treading their path delightfully boosted by what they encounter in this book. Joseph Chilton Pearce, noted author and lecturer on human development whose books include THE MAGICAL CHILD, THE MAGICAL CHILD MATURES and EVOLUTION'S END: "You have a treasure chest of experience - so rich a story.... The only one worth telling - the only game in town." Dr. Marion Woodman, the highly regarded Jungian analyst, author of numerous works and co-author of DANCING IN THE FLAMES: THE DARK GODDESS IN THE TRANSFORMATION OF CONSCIOUSNESS: "I find your descriptions of your experiences fascinating. I really feel that blackness - radiant blackness [of Kali] - you describe. Also your descriptions and explanations and in-depth experiences of the chakras are excellent. Many thanks for sharing this with me. I know it can be of value to many who are working so hard to bring East and West, body and mind together." Stanley Krippner, Ph.D., professor of psychology, author of Spiritual Dimensions of Healing and editor of Dreamscaping: "...Edwards' first person accounts are riveting. [His] descriptions of his Kundalini states are eloquent, including colorful descriptions of his imagery (olfactory and tactile as well as visual and auditory) and profound insights into the human condition. Edwards skillfully guides his readers through a pathway on which he has been an experienced traveler." (AHP Perspective, Sept/Oct 2001)

Travelling from the crucible of the once-civilised world, itself plunged into the evil and insanity of Hitler's mesmerising dreams, a dedicated and devout Catholic missionary makes his way through an era of change, touching countless lives. Father Odilo Weeger CMM has been one of Zimbabwe's outstanding personalities. His life spanned nearly a century of local and world history. He was well-known across a wide range of communities and his fascinating story is full of historical and human interest. He had a sincere love for people and he showed his concern and interest among the thousands of people from all religions whom he visited in hospitals or socialised and corresponded with. Countless others heard him in radio discussions or met him in the course of his duties and community involvements. From the terrible Nazi period in Europe, to Southern Africa, and through 'guerilla' wars that led to Zimbabwe's Independence, this novel wades into some of Africa's unresolved struggles with injustice. Many characters of note appear in his life story and the martyrdoms of several Missionaries are accurately recorded from painful evidence that he diligently gathered.
